Engineering

The Engineering Division is divided into five basic sections: Design, Right-of-Way, Land Surveying, Stormwater/Development Review and Transportation.

The Design Section performs all types of technical work concerning highway construction, County properties and other areas. This includes project design and permitting, graphics and drafting. This Section updates the township maps to include new roads, subdivisions, right-of-way, road names, etc. The Design Section also manages and hires consultants for work on County road projects.

The Right-of-Way Section is responsible for all research work pertaining to road construction and County-owned property. Before a road can be built or improved by widening, this Section must secure the necessary right-of-way from the property owners with land fronting on the proposed roadway. This section maintains all records of right-of-way that has been deeded to the County as well as County-owned property. Copies of various maps, be it township maps or aerials, may be purchased from this Section.

The Land Surveying Section provides surveying services to the Department and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. This section also provides subdivision plat review and maintains records pertaining to benchmarks and the Global Positioning System.

The Stormwater/Development Review Section reviews all new developments and commercial site plans. Drainage and floodplain management, stormwater management, basin studies, and improvement planning and implementation are also handled by this section.

The Transportation Section performs traffic counts, traffic studies, traffic engineering and capacity analysis. Decisions regarding the placement of traffic control signs and signals, changes in speed limits, addition of turning lanes, etc. are assisted by the information provided by this Section. Concerns about traffic safety, should be reported to this office by calling (352) 483-9040. This Section also works with local and state agencies and organizations to promote the safe use of non-motorized transportation and to encourage the integration of bicycle and pedestrian facilities on Lake County roads and in communities.

DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

The design and engineering activities are focused upon transforming the client's specifications into products and systems fit for the intended purpose in the harsh offshore environment.

Teams of qualified personnel follow the projects from initial design to final installation and commissioning. Computer generated documents and drawings aid the process, while efficient planning tools ensure that schedules are kept and milestones achieved. All projects are managed with the aid of software-based tools to provide accurate tracking of task dependencies, progress and scheduling consequences.
